THE LYDIA CRAZE

The Marina-mania that gripped the athletics scene in the 1977 SEA Games is a thing of the past.\u00a0 It\u2019s now the Lydia craze.\u00a0 Everywhere you go in Manila, people will go into rhapsodies over this long-legged darling of the track.<\/p>\n

Lydia De Vega has been described as having world class promise.\u00a0 And she is set to take over as the new SEA Games queen of the track from Burmese star Than Than.\u00a0 What\u2019s her background?\u00a0 How did she develop her athletic ability?\u00a0 And what does she think of her future?\u00a0 Sports Mirror finds out.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be world champion,\u2019 said Lydia, standing tiptoe and raising her right hand\u2026. reaching for the sky.\u00a0 \u201cAnd I want to be an Olympic champion,\u201d she added opening her eyes wide.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell\u201d I said, \u201cIf you are going to be a world champion, you\u2019ll definitely be an Olympic champion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNot necessarily,\u201d she quickly countered, breaking into a wide grin.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere have been world champions before who didn\u2019t win any Olympic gold,\u201d she had me there.\u00a0 How many Ron Clarkes, Jim Ryuns\u2026. world record holders had retired without an Olympic gold to their name.<\/p>\n

This observation comes from a 17-year-old college student who bursts into girlish giggles at the slightest joke, who\u2019s all arms and movement when trying to describe something vividly, has a simplicity that\u2019s disarming and a charm that\u2019s appealing, rolls her R\u2019s and \u2018aahhs\u2019 her A\u2019s with the usual Filipina accent.<\/p>\n

Fame hasn\u2019t changed her, say many Filipinos.\u00a0 She is still the simple bright-eyed girl from Barrio Kalbaryo, a thickly populated and poor suburb of metro-Manila, a suburb of closely connected houses muddy pathways where costume jewellery is made and sold.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s the girl who developed her running ability by sprinting more than 500 metres to buy cigarettes for her father when she was very young.\u00a0 A girl who used to play \u2018Chinese Garter\u201d \u2013 a popular street game where a tape or string of rubber band is held up high by two kids and the third takes a flying kick hooks the string down with the right and whips over without the leg touching the string \u2013 with such grace and balance that those who saw her said she was a natural.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n


\nTEMPTATION<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was the game she was playing when we met the other day at the 5,000ft high Gintong Alay athletics training camp in Baguio City.\u00a0 She had finished training in the morning and was dressed casually \u2013 light-brown slacks and a yellow T-shirt that had \u2018Halloween\u2019 printed boldly in front.<\/p>\n

The heptathlon trails were going on and for Lydia, the finishing tape strung between the posts presented a temptation she couldn\u2019t resist.\u00a0 \u2018Chinese Garter\u2019.\u00a0 This time she sailed over it straddle style without touching the tape.<\/p>\n

Screams of delight and laughter greeted her each time she attempted the jump.\u00a0 And Lydia would respond by pulling funny faces.\u00a0 Watching her, you would hardly guess that this is the girl who is being described as future world class material.\u00a0 She is the uncut diamond in a glittering pile of talented athletes that the Filipinos have brought together.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know I would play the game to this height even when I was very young,\u201d she said stretching her right hand well above her head and laughed.<\/p>\n

What was that?\u00a0 A glitter of silver?\u00a0 A wire hooked to one tooth?\u00a0 False teeth, I reasoned.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have false teeth,\u201d I asked, surprised because she seemed to have such a beautiful set.\u00a0 Surprised because she was young and healthy.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes\u201d she cried delightedly with impish humour at my surprise.\u00a0 She lost her front four upper teeth when very young.\u00a0 \u201cToo many sweets and candies.\u00a0 I still like them.\u00a0 I like eating very much, that\u2019s why I\u2019m so fat,\u201d she spread her arms sideways descriptively and wiggled her hips.<\/p>\n

Lydia was still running gap-toothed in last year\u2019s national championship.\u00a0 It was only late last year that she received her dentures from her father Francisco, her one-time coach who is now her confidante and masseur.<\/p>\n

Just then he came up, right hand in a bandage, and smiled widely.\u00a0 His front four teeth were also missing.\u00a0 \u201cI lost them in a fight,\u201d he explained.\u00a0 He was a boxer in his younger days.<\/p>\n

It was in the streets and alleys of Kalbaryo that Lydia developed her talents.\u00a0 When she was just nine, she would run like a hare to buy cigarettes for her father.<\/p>\n

It was while playing \u2018Chinese Garter\u2019 that Lydia was spotted.\u00a0 When school was over it was the streets and \u2018Chinese Garter\u2019 for most of the girls.\u00a0 One school teacher noticed the facile grace and perfect balance with which she executed her jumps.<\/p>\n

He asked Lydia to compete in the school sports the following day.\u00a0 She was then just a frail, waif-like 12-year-old. Lydia agreed.\u00a0 But she had to win over her skeptical parents first and that was left to a neighbour who persuaded her parents to let her compete.<\/p>\n

Grudgingly, Francisco forked the pesos necessary to buy a new pair of shorts for Lydia.\u00a0 But unconvinced, Francisco did not attend the meet.\u00a0 The only fan Lydia had then was her neighbour who was cheering wildly as Lydia stormed to first place in five events.<\/p>\n

Some dust was stirred as an athlete couldn\u2019t compete in more than four events.\u00a0 But Lydia was given her prizes all the same.\u00a0 That finally convinced Francisco that his daughter had some talent after all.\u00a0 He began attending her sports meets and became her first coach and trainer.<\/p>\n

Simple, soft-spoken, chain-smoking Francisco has been a controversial figure in Lydia\u2019s athletics career.\u00a0 There is this story of how he slapped Lydia in public when she was training at the Marikina Stadium where she set the national 400 record of 54.6 last year.<\/p>\n

Lydia made several foul jumps in the long jump.\u00a0 Francisco, convinced that she was fooling around, gave his daughter two tight slaps in front of the other athletes.<\/p>\n

Lydia cried softly \u2026. \u201cIt hurt,\u201d she said the other day, rubbing her cheeks.\u00a0 But it worked, and Lydia was more serious and went 5.5-plus metres in her subsequent attempts.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have these two hands,\u201d said Francisco, the boxer in him surfacing.\u00a0 \u201cIf the right is not enough, then I give the left.\u00a0 But I don\u2019t ill-treat my children.\u00a0 I give them what they want.\u00a0 When Lydia had washed up and was ready to go back that day when I slapped her, she came up to me smiling and asked, \u2018Papa. Give me some money.\u2019 I gave her the money.\u00a0 I only discipline my children.\u00a0 Francisco has six children, three boys and three girls.\u00a0 Lydia is the fourth.<\/p>\n

There was another incident when an angry Francisco pulled his daughter out from training camp in Baguio because she was being put into the 800 metres.\u00a0 Many coaches, including Asia\u2019s legendary Chi Cheng, believe that it is over the 800 metres that Lydia will make her mark.<\/p>\n

Those long legs were meant for the 800 metres, they said.\u00a0 But Francisco would have none of it.\u00a0 She is too young for it now.\u00a0 Maybe when she is older, he said.\u00a0 Attempts to get Lydia back into camp failed and she was suspended for some time last year before the warring parties were reconciled.<\/p>\n

Father and daughter enjoy a very close relationship.\u00a0 \u201cHe has every right to spank me and decide what\u2019s good for me,\u201d said Lydia.\u00a0 Then a ring on her engagement finger caught my eye.<\/p>\n

Is she engaged?\u00a0 \u201cYes to my father,\u201d she joked.\u00a0 \u201cHe made it himself and gave it to me.\u00a0 I wear it always.\u201d\u00a0 Francisco is also an artisan who makes the costume jewellery that one finds in tourist centres in Manila.<\/p>\n

PROMINENCE <\/strong><\/p>\n

It was as a spindly-legged schoolgirl that Lydia swept into prominence by bagging three individual golds and two relay golds at the 1979 Singapore Asean Schools athletics championship.\u00a0 Now Lydia, who turns 16 on December 26th<\/sup> \u2013 Boxing Day \u2013 has grown in stature and physique.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am 5ft 6ins now,\u201d she proclaims proudly, \u201cand weigh 120lbs.\u201d\u00a0 Again, that hip wiggle.\u00a0 \u201cI am a first-year student in college and hope to pass out with a degree in physical education.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lydia renews her rivalry with Malaysia\u2019s Mumtaz Jaafar \u2013 a rivalry which dates backs to the Singapore Asean Schools meet \u2013 in this Manila Sea Games and will attempt to crack the myth of invincibility surrounding Burma\u2019s Than Than who holds the Sea Games 200m, 400m, 800m and 400m hurdles records.<\/p>\n

The brown-skinned, dark-eyed Filipina is down for the 200m and 400m where she has a season\u2019s best of 24.0 and 55.2 \u2026. Which make her the brightest gold medal prospect in both events.<\/p>\n

Can she win the events?\u00a0 The playful child in Lydia took a backseat.\u00a0 She looked mournfully at her left instep.\u00a0 Her left foot was bandaged.\u00a0 \u201cI really don\u2019t know,\u201d she shook her head.\u00a0 \u201cI injured my foot, you know when I was climbing the stairs back to camp after training in Baguio.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a bit better now.\u00a0 But I can only hope to do my best.\u00a0 I hear that Mumtaz has done some good times.\u00a0 And Than Than is a very powerful and experienced runner.\u00a0 I can try my best.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lydia has been taking it easy during training feeling secure that the two golds are hers, says Gintong Alay head coach Tony Benson.\u00a0 But when she heard that Mumtaz had gone under 12 for the 100m and clocked 24.4 for the 200m, she saw the threat and put in more effort.<\/p>\n

Benson agrees that Lydia has world class potential.\u00a0 \u201cShe will make a very good 800m runner.\u00a0 She has the speed but will have to build up stamina and endurance and put in more effort,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Lydia could make an impact in next year\u2019s New Delhi Asian Games.\u00a0 But it is the 1988 Olympics that every athletics follower in The Philippines is waiting for.\u00a0 This is where she is going to make her name known worldwide, they say.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s if some boy doesn\u2019t come along by then and asks her to decide between him and track and field,\u201d quips Nars Padilla, camp commandant at Baguio City, who says that Lydia is a very exemplary athlete.<\/p>\n
