{"id":1432,"date":"2023-03-30T17:20:33","date_gmt":"2023-03-30T09:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mysportsflame.com\/sportsflame\/?p=1432"},"modified":"2023-03-30T18:36:12","modified_gmt":"2023-03-30T10:36:12","slug":"a-humble-pro","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mysportsflame.com\/sportsflame\/2023\/03\/a-humble-pro\/","title":{"rendered":"A Humble Pro"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2 dir=\"auto\"><em><strong>By Joe Carlos<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">I first met Ramayah when I was a rookie sports writer with the Malay Mail in 1980.\u00a0 He became a regular fixture in the Malaysian Open tournaments and I\u2019d regularly seek him out for a few quotes.\u00a0 What struck me then was how humble he was.\u00a0 While covering the 1981 Manila Sea Games, we heard that Ramayah had won the Marcos Invitational that starred several world-class players including Bernhard Langer.\u00a0 By and by, Ramayah\u2019s prowess as a top national golfer grew by leaps and bounds and naturally he represented our nation in several World Cups.\u00a0 I remembered how well he played in an international Skins Game organised as part of the Official Launching of the Sungai Long Golf &amp; Country Club.\u00a0 He played against the superstar Vijay Singh, Jack Nicklaus and Jack Nicklaus Jr.\u00a0 My last encounter with him was over coffee during the Selangor Masters at Seri Selangor GC in November.\u00a0 He was fine then.\u00a0 Ramayah is a legend and will never be forgotten for his humbleness and willing to help others.\u00a0 Once, I had to write a course review on Meru Valley GCC in Ipoh.\u00a0 Ramayah was the pro there and offered to play 18 holes with me.\u00a0 He agreed to give me a 12-stroke handicap and somehow I played okay and won RM35 from him.\u00a0 I\u2019d rather think he allowed me to win.\u00a0 A true professional.\u00a0 I\u2019m grateful to have known him as a friend.\u00a0 The golf industry will indeed miss his warm smiles and professionalism.
