\nColin Hart:\u00a0<\/strong>My enduring memory of Muhammad Ali\u2019s\u00a0world title defence\u00a0against Joe Bugner was that it was a crushing breakfast-time bore.
\nAlong with the 22,000 fans in the Merdeka Stadium, I yawned my way through 15 tedious rounds,\u00a0 as Bugner at the opening bell put himself in reverse and didn\u2019t bother to change gear for the next 45 minutes.
\nIt must have\u00a0been a bitter disappointment for those who bought tickets as the Malaysians had been looking forward to seeing a spectacular Ali performance.<\/p>\n

But Bugner\u2019s\u00a0passive negativity made that impossible,\u00a0much to the embarrassment of the British boxing writers at ringside.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Joe had lost a 12-round decision to Ali\u00a0in a non-title fight in Las Vegas, two years before.<\/p>\n

And it became blatantly obvious from the start he had decided he had no chance of beating\u00a0Ali, so his main objective was survival.<\/p>\n

Though the fight began at\u00a09.30am\u00a0to meet the requirements of American TV,\u00a0I still found the heat and humidity overpowering.\u00a0I felt extremely sorry for Ali as he never stopped chasing the reluctant and ever-retreating Bugner.
\nAfter Ali\u2019s inevitable and extremely easy victory Bugner\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 was hammered by the British media,\u00a0incensed at his lack of ambition. In my report I called him \u201cThe Harmless Hercules.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And what made us even more incensed was Bugner\u2019s nonchalant attitude once he got back to his hotel.<\/p>\n

While Ali was lying in his bedroom suffering from heat exhaustion Bugner was telling us\u00a0\u201cThe heat was unbearable. I\u2019d have killed myself if I had forced the fight too early.\u201d<\/p>\n

An hour later Bugner was enjoying himself in the swimming pool splashing about and waving to his friends, only stopping to drink champagne.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Mickey Duff, his promoter, was disgusted with him. The fact\u00a0Bugner hadn\u2019t tried to win the richest prize in sport, made Duff angry. He said \u201cHe should have locked himself in his room and cried his eyes out.\u201d<\/p>\n

There was a telling conversation between the pair of them at that poolside. Duff said \u201cI suppose at the end of the day the name of the game is money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

An unmarked grinning Bugner replied. \u201cYes, and being able to spend it.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Hungarian-born Bugner was never popular with British fans after he had controversially\u00a0beaten national idol Henry Cooper.<\/p>\n
